Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been thinking about my blog and the kind of content I produce, along with the kinds of posts I love to read. I really enjoy browsing through tags on some of my favourite blogs so thought it was about time I did some myself. I’m kicking off with the Unpopular Opinions book tag, which was created by TheBookArcher. I wasn’t actually tagged by anyone in particular but thought it would be fun to partake anyway!

1. A popular book or series that you didn’t like
I’m trying to think of recent reads for this tag and the first book that comes to mind is Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik. It’s not that I hated this book, it just took me a literal month to read and I didn’t seem to get the hype and love it as much as everyone else did.
2. A popular book or series that every one else seems to hate but you love
So maybe not everybody hates this series but I definitely never seem to see anybody loving it! I read the Angel series by L.A. Weatherly about five years ago now and it honestly just blew me away. I haven’t re-read it since, I mean my opinions might seriously change but I won’t forget how I felt when I read this series for the first time!
3. A love triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with OR an OTP that you don’t like
So sticking with the whole recent reads thing, I read To Kill a Kingdom last year and I just didn’t quite get the relationship there. I never felt particularly attached to the pair. Individually the main characters were great, but together? I’m not invested.
4. A popular book genre that you hardly reach for
I don’t tend to read much non-fiction, crime, thriller or historical fiction. That’s not to say I would never or haven’t, I just seem to gravitate towards more YA fantasy or contemporary. Science fiction is a genre I will read but rarely.
5. A popular or beloved character that you do not like
As much as I enjoyed Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, I’m just not so sure about Mare? As a character she has super potential but I just didn’t feel any attachment or love for her.
6. A popular author that you can’t seem to get into
*please don’t hate me* Maggie Stiefvater… I tried to read The Raven Boys a few years ago and really struggled to get through it. I did finish the book but just had no desire to continue with the series. Maybe I will try again one day but it just didn’t seem for me!
7. A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing
I’m sick of reading about the good girl/bad girl trope. The angelic girl who can do no wrong and the “bad” girl who stands up for herself. Why must girls be pitted against one another?
8. A popular series that you have no interest in reading
This was easy, the series came straight to me! While I love the TV show I just have no interest in reading A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. That seems like a huge commitment and adult fantasy just isn’t really my thing right now.
9. The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or T.V. show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?
Oooh this is difficult! I think for this one my answer has to be To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han. I enjoyed the book when I read it a few years ago but I really loved the Netflix adaptation and can’t wait for the sequel! P.S. I Still Love You was a lovely book so I definitely have high hopes for the next adaptation.
So there we have it, my first book tag in while! I really enjoyed participating so it’s definitely something I’m going to be doing more of. I tag Northern Plunder, I Am Book Mad, Two Book Thieves and Luchia Houghton!
I’m going to have so much fun with this!
I’m one of the people who loved Spinning Silver lol. I agree with Maggie, I didn’t get into The Raven Boys either and haven’t picked up the sequel! Might do this tag myself 🙂
You should do it! I look forward to reading 🙂
I have to say I agree with not being a fan of Maggie Steifvater’s books… I read The Raven Cycle years ago and enjoyed it at the time but I think it’s one of those series’ where I look back and can’t see what I really liked about it. Anyway, great post! I’ll definitely be doing this tab, I love seeing and talking about unpopular bookish opinions 🙂
Yeah I can’t really remember much about the book myself… I look forward to reading your tag 🙂
This is such a good post! I love reading unpopular opinions!
Thank you!
I am with you on Steifvater. I read the first book in the Mercy Falls werewolf series. It was okay but I don’t understand the hype around it, and it didn’t make me want to read the second book. I still want to try the Raven Cycle books. We will see when I get to them.
I think I’ve read that too! Was it Shiver? I enjoyed it at the time but can’t really remember much about it now I’m afraid.
i know im supposed to leave a proper comment but im just smiling hugely at being able to like youre post hahaa.
enjoyed your answers + ill add this to my to do list!
Haha yay thank you! And thanks for actually telling me about it haha.
Looking forward to reading it 🙂
Great tag post! I’m completely the opposite in regards to genres, I’ll reach for non fiction and historical fiction a lot, but don’t tend to read much fantasy or Sci-Fi, although I’m trying to branch into them more! ?
