A few weeks back I asked my followers on Twitter to send me their favourite book or series for a blog post I was planning, and here it is! Today I’m talking all about the popular books (and series) I haven’t read. Please don’t hate me.
Some of these I do own, some of these I don’t and some I may have already started but put down. Many of these series are well loved and part of me can’t believe I haven’t already them while the other part is like “but there are so many books to read!” Anyway, let’s get stuck into the list of popular books I haven’t read and see whether your favourite is on here.

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff
So this seems to be a Marmite kind of series. Some people love it, some people hate it. I actually did start Nevernight by listening to the audiobook but found that I just wasn’t concentrating enough and ended up a little confused.
Verdict: I do think that I will enjoy the story, especially after hearing how much some friends have enjoyed it, but it’s not a high priority right now.
The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare
I read (most of) The Mortal Instruments series going back about six years now, if not more, and did really enjoy it. However I never got around to picking up the final book annoyingly and so I’ve come to a bit of a standstill with Cassandra Clare’s books. Can I just dive into this series or do I need to finish TMI, and remember what happened?
Verdict: It is a series I’d be willing to pick up!
Carry On by Rainbow Rowell
I’ve only read two books by Rainbow: Fangirl and Eleanor & Park. Both were quite some time ago now and with neither being a solid favourite and with the issues surrounding the latter, this isn’t an author I’m desperate to read more of.
Verdict: I don’t think I’ll be reading this book.
Monsters of Verity by V. E. Schwab
Ok so this one I really don’t have an excuse for. I’ve got the books, I’ve met V and had them signed and have also enjoyed other books they have written. So why haven’t I read them yet? Answer is, I don’t really know! Maybe I’m intimated by the fact that everyone loves them so much?
Verdict: This is a series I definitely want to get around to.
Red Rising by Pierce Brown
This is another series that seems to top so many people’s favourites lists. I own the first book and did give it a go, also in audio form, but just could not get into it.
Verdict: I don’t want to write it off as the premise sounds quite good, however my lack of interest in the story so far is holding it quite low on my TBR.
Percy Jackson & The Olympians by Rick Riordan
I feel like younger teenage me would have loved these books, so I don’t know why I didn’t ever pick them up! I did watch the films a few years back and kinda enjoyed them if that stands for anything?
Verdict: I don’t think they’re really for me at this time.
Shatter Me by Taherah Mafi
This series is another that seems to be either loved or hated. I jumped on the bandwagon very late and picked the first book up way after everyone else. And well, sadly, I didn’t love it. I got around 20% of the way through, if that, and DNF’d the book. There also seems to be some very problematic aspects to the books too.
Verdict: I don’t think I’ll be giving them another go.
Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire
I’ve been meaning to get around to this for the longest time, and I very gratefully received a copy off my Amazon wishlist from Lauren so I really have no excuse now.
Verdict: I will definitely be reading this.
Sawkill Girls by Clare Legrand
This is a book that has received endless praise and I know I would love it. My friends have nothing but good things to say and the synopsis sounds right up my street.
Verdict: I’m really excited to read this.
Radio Silence by Alice Oseman
Having read Heartstopper volumes one and two by Alice, I’m really interested in reading some of their other work. Quite a few people mentioned this book in reply to my tweets so I really should check it out.
Verdict: I’m off to checkout Goodreads for this book right after writing this.
Okay so out of the 10 books and series mentioned:
- I definitely want to read four – Monsters of Verity, Every Heart a Doorway, Sawkill Girls and Radio Silence
- I would consider picking up three books – Nevernight, The Infernal Devices and Red Rising
- I won’t be reading three – Carry On, Percy Jackson and Shatter Me
So not only was this post really fun to put together, I realised that I actually own a Percy Jackson book and still have my copy of Shatter Me so it has also reminded me to declutter them from my shelves!
I hope you don’t hate me after seeing all the popular books I haven’t read. Have I included any of your favourites here? Do you have any differing opinions to me?

i read all of shatter me, it was a chore and im not a fan. its v pro – abusive relationships.
i’ve read 1 halfof monsters of verity and is fab!! 😀
So many marmite books in here! I had to DNF Shatter Me and read Red Rising but also never managed to get around to reading the rest of the series…
You really need to read Sawkill Girls!
Ooh, I’m picking up a copy of Sawkill girls later on this week if you want to buddy read?? ☺️☺️
I love this type of post! I find it interesting that you’ve STILL not read Sawkill Girls! I am interesting to see what you think about Nevernight though.
I think I would enjoy Nevernight too. I also really didn’t like certain aspects of Shatter me. I finished it, but I never picked up the next and won’t be. Love this post!
I have only read four of these over the years haha. I wasn’t much a fan of Shatter Me, but also I read an unformatted NetGalley version that missed all of the lines crossed out so I didn’t get the full experience.
I’m only just now reading Nevernight despite having it since it was published haha. It’s a hard read but I’m enjoying it.

I have also never read any of these books. I am hoping to read Sawkill Girls very soon though!
I definitely recommend Monsters of Verity, I really enjoyed those books! And I also really enjoyed Every Heart a Doorway as well! I’m sad to see you think Percy Jackson and he Olympians are not for you (I love the series) but maybe it’s for the better if you don’t force yourself to read it just for the sake of it. 🙂
aaand I have just realised I have read none of these either!!
*chants* MONSTERS OF VERITY MONSTER OF VERITY MONSTERS OF VERITY
Girl, come on now 😘
Great blog post! I’m working on something similar at the moment. I absolutely feel the same about the Percy Jackson books, I’ve tried to read a couple but I think they’re probably just a bit “young” for me if that makes sense and I’m gutted because younger me would have been obsessed with them.
I haven’t read most of these either! I’ve read the first Shatter Me and I do recommend it, it was a fun time! I’ve also read Nevernight and it was really good, especially as an audiobook – but it took me a while to get into it too!
I’ve not read any of these yet either!
I attempted reading the Infernal Devices. It was my introduction to Cassandra Clare—the year after people couldn’t stop obsessing over the Mortal Instruments. Sadly, the first book was such a disappointment that I never continued the series.
I also read the first Percy Jackson book, and I actually found it really enjoyable! I would consider reading the other books in the series, if I came across the books in the library.
As for the other books you listed, I haven’t read them either!
I definitely recommend Nevernight. Personally, I don’t know if I would have enjoyed it as much without the audiobook, but Kristoff is such a talented writer, and I loved world of this story.
There’s a few here I haven’t read too. Including Sawkill Girls but I do now own a copy and I need to get to it too!
