A while back I wrote about the popular books I haven’t read and I had so much fun and I think you liked it too, so I’m here today talking all about the popular series I haven’t finished!
If I told you about ALL the series I haven’t finished we would be here for about a year so I’ve selected seven from your favourites, which you told me about on Twitter a few months back! Funnily enough they’re all fantasy. Maybe I’ll write another about contemporary series in the near future?
Let’s get into the popular series I haven’t finished.
A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab
Okaaaay so I know this one is really loved across the bookish community and I apologise that I am yet to finish the series. I read the first two books within a few days of each ot her and I did enjoy them but I just haven’t gotten around to finishing A Conjuring of Light.
Verdict: I WILL finish this series… at some point.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
Another favourite of many people and another where I’ve gotten two books deep and just… trailed off. I really did enjoy Daughter of Smoke and Bone but I tried to re-read Days of Blood and Starlight via audiobook and didn’t feel connected to it.
Verdict: I loved the Strange the Dreamer duology so I think I need to give this another go, just not right now.
The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
I read The Raven Boys so long ago now that I’m not even sure I could tell you what happened. I mean I know some big things that happened but I would definitely have to re-read this before continuing. However, I really didn’t love it the first time round sadly.
Verdict: I’m definitely not in a rush to read this series… I mean I probably won’t.
An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
When I first read An Ember in the Ashes I loved it. I flew through it, and couldn’t get enough! So of course, like any bookworm, I ordered book two on Amazon Prime so that I could carry on reading it the next day. I got maybe 20% through and stopped? Your guess is as good as mine.
Verdict: Given how much I enjoyed book one and how much everyone seems to love it, it may deserve another go!
Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco
I actually really enjoyed Stalking Jack the Ripper, even giving it five stars when I’d finished it! So why did I not continue with the series at the time? No idea. I did start Hunting Prince Dracula but just didn’t feel that compulsion to really get stuck into it. I was in the midst of finishing university at the time, writing my dissertation etc, so it was likely that my mind was just elsewhere.
Verdict: I will continue the series, I still have book two on my shelves.
Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
This is one of those series where you feel like you love it at the time but when you look back you aren’t so sure… Book one was great for me. A YA fantasy with an interesting romance and some good action. Great! Then I enjoyed book two less, and book three wasn’t 5/5 either. So when book four subsequently came out, I bought it… but it’s been sat on my shelf ever since.
Verdict: I am intrigued to see where the story goes but I’m not desperate to pick it up and if I’m honest I probably won’t.
The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Mayer
Gosh I couldn’t even tell you when I first read Cinder, maybe four years ago? It was an ok read at the time but I don’t think it would be a series I would rave about now.
Verdict: Well, that was easy… I won’t be picking up the rest of this series.
So there we have it, all of the popular series I haven’t finished. If anything, writing this post has made it clear which books I can unhaul from my shelves (obviously creating space for more books). Did I include any of your favourites here? Please don’t hate me!

I love The Lunar Chronicles, but we all have different tastes. I really didn’t like An Ember in the Ashes, but I seem to be in the minority on that.
I have yet to finish the Red Queen series like you but I don’t know if I will. It reminded me too much of Red Rising by Pierce Brown and don’t want to read a “replica” of one of my favourite series of all time. Even though I know that it’s not really a “copy-paste” as both books were published during the exact same time which bothers me because I found Red Queen really good. But unfortunately the similarities between the two do bother me too much. I might pick the second book up but it will definitely take a while.
Your list reminds me of all the popular series I have yet to even start! I *did* attempt Red Queen and got through book 2 just about. I had to give up though as to me it was such a trope soup of every YA dystopia ever, plus book 2 being pretty much filler. Four books was too much, and a spoilerful synopsis confirmed for me that actually I wouldn’t have enjoyed it any more even if I had gotten to the end.But it’s so hard knowing when to DNF a series you’ve started, right? Because you’re kinda invested, but then again if you aren’t definitely enjoying it…
I loved Shades of Magic, and hope you enjoy ACOL if you do read it! I enjoyed The Raven Cycle, but it’s definitely quite a strange series, and not for everyone. I gave up on the Red Queen series after Glass Sword, that book was such a struggle, I didn’t want to read anymore. I wasn’t that keen on An Ember In The Ashes, but my friend says the series gets better, so I think I’m going to continue. I’m not that sure about The Lunar Chronicles, I read the first two books, but it’s been two years since I read Scarlet and I’ve not felt the urge to pick up the others. I’ve read the first two Daughter of Smoke and Bone books and the novella, but I wasn’t that keen on the second book and the third book is quite a chunky one so I’m not sure if I’ll read that. I read Stalking Jack The Ripper last month, and enjoyed it, so I’ll definitely be reading Hunting Prince Dracula soon.
