Books I Read in October 2019

Wow so I’m actually writing about the books I read in October only a couple of days after the month ended! Yay. I only realised as I was putting this post together that I read ELEVEN books last month. I really felt as though I’d read most of these books ages ago, so funny how time flies. Anyway, we best crack on with the wrap up, otherwise we could still be here next month!

The Risk by Elle Kennedy

I’ve raved about my love of Elle Kennedy books time and time again on here, so I don’t really need to go into any detail. A new adult sports college romance with non problematic relationships, need I say more? I sadly didn’t enjoy it as much as I did her other books but it was still a solid 3.5/5.

Scandalous by L. J. Shen

After rating one of her previous books 1 star, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this one. Especially after it had received rave reviews on Goodreads. I actually enjoyed it much more than the first book, and it definitely fit the bill as a dark, bully romance. Definitely check out the content warnings! 2.5/5.

Prince Charming by Rachel Hawkins

Ahhhh I loved this SO much, huge thanks to the lovely Imi for gifting me this book. I honestly didn’t know how much I needed soft and sweet Royal Family romance. I also definitely prefer the new name and rebrand. Spoiler free review to come! 4/5.

The Play by Elle Kennedy

Oh hey, another Elle Kennedy book. I much preferred this to The Risk, although it wasn’t quite perfect, but check out all my thoughts in this non spoiler review. 4.5/5.

Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren

After reading The Unhoneymooners on holiday earlier in the year I’d been wanting to read more by these authors, and was so grateful to be gifted this book by Charlotte. While I didn’t love it as much as my first Christina Lauren experience it was the perfect rom com read. Warning: lots of smut! 4/5.

Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson

An Enchantment of Ravens, which I reviewed here, was one of my fave books of 2017. So, I of course had very high expectations for Rogerson’s next novel. Sadly it didn’t quite meet them, but I enjoyed the book nonetheless. If you want to read about sword wielding librarians, sorcery and a demon that can shift into a cat, then look no further. 3/5.

Cruel Prince by A. Jade

If you couldn’t guess from the title, yep it’s another ‘bully’ romance. Not the strongest of storylines, fairly predictable and the story hinges on lack of communication but it was an ok read with an interesting romantic relationship. 2.5/5.

Desperate Measures by Katee Robert

So looks like October was the month of smut! I do struggle to rate it because generally the storyline and the execution isn’t the best, but this was a retelling of Aladdin where Jafar and Jasmine become romantically involved and it was definitely an…. intriguing read. 2.5/5.

The Wicked King by Holly Black

This was definitely due a re-read ahead of Queen of Nothing! I listened to the audiobook and loved it just as much as the first time I had devoured it. I am SO READY for the final book in this series and literally can’t say anything because of spoilers. 4.5/5.

The Secret by J. L. Beck and C. Hallman

Funny story… this is the third book in a series. I didn’t know this when I picked this up. I also didn’t realise that I had actually read the first book, and rated it 0 stars. Funnily enough I didn’t love this either! It was better than the first by far but I still had some issues. I won’t be reading anything else by these authors. 1/5.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

Ok so this was one of my most anticipated reads of 2019 and it did not disappoint. Leigh is one of my favourite authors and I was so excited to read her debut novel, particularly after attending her event in Liverpool. Ninth House was filled with secret societies, mystery and intrigue, magic and the occult and an all consuming plot filled with twists and turns. Phew, we made it to the end of the books I read in October! I think overall this was a pretty fantastic reading month, putting the couple of let down reads to one side. I’d love to hear from you if you’ve read any of these!
