The nights have been getting darker, the central heating has been switched on and the pumpkin spice candles have been lit. AUTUMN IS HERE and so is my October 2020 TBR! The last few months of the year are my favourite, and given the state of the world right now I’m going to milk it more than usual.
So, Halloween is up first! That means binge watching scary films, decorating the house and of course, digging into some spooky reads! I did a similar thing last year and loved it, but that was just for the weekend, so this time it’s going to be month long. My lovely pals Lauren and Bec are also hosting the Spooks and Tea Readathon. I’m definitely going to be tying my reads into that too! Let’s dig in.

The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell*
Prompt: A horror book that was recommended to you
I first heard about this online somewhere so I’m taking that as a recommendation, but as soon as I heard the premise I knew I needed to read it. A Victorian ghost story with two alternating timelines and a haunted estate, it sounds like the perfect spooky read!

Rules For Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall*
Prompt: A book with Autumnal vibes
Once a year, the path appears in the forest. Exactly twelve months after her sister disappeared, Sara accepts an invite to “play the game” and find local ghost legend Lucy Gallows, believing is the only way to reach her sister. This is told through transcripts, in a documentary style, and sounds super chilling,

These Witches Don’t Burn by Isabel Sterling*
Prompts: A book featuring witches and an LGBTQ+ horror book
After a blood ritual results in dark magic spreading through Salem, elemental witch Hannah must team up with the last person she wants to be around – her ex girlfriend. As the attacks become deadlier, Hannah’s powers will be tested as she tries to save her coven and date Morgan, the cute ballerina who is new to town. Thank you Furb for the copy!

Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis*
Prompts: A horror book you love the cover of
I’ve been so excited to read this after hearing such rave reviews, and my copy, which I received for my birthday from a friend, came with sprayed edges too! I don’t know too much about the plot, aside from a young woman returns to the eerie town of Harrow Lake, the place where her father’s most successful film was shot. But someone, or something, is stalking her.

Moonstruck by Grace Ellis and Shea Beagle*
Prompts: A book with paranormal creatures and LGBTQ+ book
This super cute graphic novel was another gift, from my pal Lauren! Julie, a werewolf barista takes her new girlfriend on a date to a magic show. Things take an unexpected turn when a horrible spell is cast on one of their friends, so it’s up to them to stop the magician before it’s too late.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno – Garcia*
Prompts: A horror book by an author of colour and recommended to me
A lot of my pals have read this book and loved it, Moon in particular, so I have really high hopes! Set in 1950s Mexico, Noemí heads to an old house in the distant countryside after receiving a frantic letter from her cousin asking for help saving her from a mysterious terror. I’ve read reviews that mention decay, skin crawl and shivers and seriously chilling vibes, so I can’t wait. Especially as this was another lovely gift from a pal.
Considering I haven’t been the best at sticking to TBRs lately this might be a little optimistic. BUT I’m super excited and ready to get stuck into the season so I’m going to try my best! Thank you for sticking around for my October 2020 TBR! Are any of these books on your TBR? What are your spooky read reccs?
