This is one of my favourite pieces of end of year content to read from fellow bloggers, and I love putting them together myself, so here are the best books of 2020 in my opinion. Well, most of them anyway. I’ll be posting my favourite romance reads separately tomorrow!
In such a shitty year I am so happy to have read so many amazing books to get me through it. Honestly I don’t know what I would have done without books and the community throughout this year so thank you.
These books are the cream of the crop, the ones that I read which have truly stuck with me ever since I turned the last page, the ones in which while I was reading them I was just absolutely enthralled! I did read a lot of other great books but I can’t call them all my faves can I. Though when I look back at this I’ll probably curse myself for forgetting some!
Here are my best books of 2020!
Ok, who is surprised? This was such an emotional rollercoaster! Yes there were a few things to get to grip with in the first 20% or so with lots of rich world building, but I absolutely loved this adult offering from SJM. It was much more mature and complex than her previous novels but has all the elements that we know and love from her work. It was funny, action packed, hot, heartbreaking with such endearing and well developed characters, and it was just everything. SJM loves to flip things on their head so I genuinely have no idea at all where this story is going to go but the first instalment was undoubtedly 5/5 stars for me.
This book, and the series actually, took me by surprise. I read and loved (most of) The Mortal Instrument like ten years ago but never finished the last book but just didn’t want to re-read them so dove right into this, and I prefer it! I fell in love with these characters and the ending of this book tore my heart out, but I’m super excited to continue with the Shadowhunters books in the New Year.
Whyyyy did I wait so long to read this?! A short story about a house of children who have visited other magical words through mysterious doors. With ace, trans and contamination rep and a diverse cast of characters, this was a gripping and creepy tale and I really need to continue with the series.
In this memoir, George tells us about their life experiences from being young to becoming an adult as a queer black person. The book covered lots of important topics such as racism, homophobia, marginalisation, identity, and sexual harassment making it an impactful and thought provoking read. I listened to the audiobook which was narrated by George themselves and I feel that made it a more immersive read.
I think it’s fair to say that this is one of the iconic books of 2020 that seemed to take the entire community by storm, and with good reason in my opinion! I’ve posted a full spoiler free review of this already so check that out for some more in depth thoughts but this was just a completely magical and captivating read and I loved this different style of story from V!
Maybe I’m cheating a little bit as this isn’t technically released until 2021 but I very luckily read an advanced copy in 2020 so I’m counting it. This book. THIS BOOOOK. I was on absolute tenterhooks from beginning to end but I could not put it down. Hands down the best book in this series, and one of my all time favourite books ever. It was packed full of action, some seriously heartbreaking moments and I was totally blown away by Samantha’s genius. How am I going to wait for book five?!
This book was everything I needed and more. A collection of short stories told from Cardan’s point of view, we get to see scenes from the original trilogy, some new content and also dig more into his childhood. I loved this extra content and being back in this world just feels so good. It truly is a favourite series of mine and I can’t wait to re-read it… again.
My Mum and Dad gifted me all three of Debbie Tung’s graphic novels this year and I totally devoured them. I honestly feel like Debbie is a kindred spirit; I could relate so many scenarios in the collections and felt truly seen. I can’t wait to read more from her! My time spent reading these really was a lovely bright spot in this gloomy year.
Special mention to: Aurora Burning by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff | Good Girl, Bad Blood by Holly Jackson | Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes | Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron | Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco | Radiance by Grace Draven | Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Okay, so there are (most of) my best books of 2020! Did you guess some of them? Are any of them your favourites? Keep an eye out for my favourite romance reads which is going live tomorrow!
